How it works

This Crypto Tax Compliance Calculator helps Australian investors and traders work out their tax position for the 2026-27 financial year. It calculates gains and losses for all digital assets using up-to-date ATO rules, using FIFO (first-in-first-out) cost-base matching, and lets you deduct exchange fees. Paste your transactions in the format below: a summary you can copy into your own records or hand to your accountant is generated on screen.

  1. 1Enter your crypto transactions: one per line, in the format: Date, Asset, Type, Quantity, Price (AUD), Fee (AUD). Most exchanges let you export a transaction history you can reformat into this in a spreadsheet.
  2. 2Select the correct financial year for reporting
  3. 3Confirm whether you are classed as an investor (CGT applies) or a trader (income tax applies)
  4. 4Review fee deduction settings as per your situation
  5. 5Read the total gains, allowable losses, fees claimed and tax due; they update as you type
  6. 6Copy the on-screen summary for your own records or to share with your accountant

Questions people ask

How are crypto gains taxed in Australia?
If you’re an investor, all profits on disposal are taxed as capital gains at your marginal rate. If you’re a trader, profits count as ordinary income. Losses may be offset against other income (with limits).
Do I report every transaction?
Yes. Each buy, sell, swap, earn, or spend event must be reported with AUD values on the date. Transfers between your own wallets don’t trigger tax.
Can I deduct trading and exchange fees?
Yes, you can claim reasonable trading/exchange/brokerage fees as deductions from gains. Keep all receipts/statements.
What happens if I forget/misreport transactions?
ATO data-matches with exchanges. Inaccurate or missing reports can trigger audits, penalties, or legal consequences.
Are complicated DeFi and NFT transactions covered?
This tool handles most basic transaction types. For complex DeFi/NFTs, consult a tax accountant or use professional crypto tax software.
