How it works

This calculator works out the return on a crypto purchase from what you paid and what you sold for, and the capital gains tax at your marginal rate - with the 50% discount when you've held it over 12 months. The ATO treats crypto as a capital gains tax asset, so each sale or swap can create a gain or loss.

  1. 1Select your cryptocurrency (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.) and preferred currency.
  2. 2Enter your initial investment amount and the buy/sell prices per coin.
  3. 3Input the dates of your purchase and sale (or today if unsold).
  4. 4If you are an Australian resident, tick to enable CGT adjustment and enter your marginal tax rate for after-tax ROI.
  5. 5Review the results: pre-tax return (% and $), after-tax return, and yearly CAGR.

Worked examples

Bitcoin Sold Within a Year

$5,000 of Bitcoin bought at $70,000 a coin and sold 6 months later at $91,600, on a 30% marginal tax rate.

The sale brings $6,543, a $1,543 gain (30.9%). Held under 12 months, there's no CGT discount, so tax at 30% is about $463 and $1,080 is left - 21.6% after tax.

The Same Trade Held 18 Months

The same purchase and sale price, but held for 18 months.

Held over 12 months, the 50% CGT discount halves the taxable gain, so tax is about $231 and $1,311 is left - 26.2% after tax.

Questions people ask

What is crypto ROI?
